Equal partnership and co-operation – one of the most important factors  in the developing electricity market

INTERNATIONAL AND NATIONAL ORGANISATIONS

Lietuvos Energija AB group of companies is actively participating in the activities of international and national organisations because this involvement enables the company to form a proper position in attempting to maintain close relations with other partners in the electricity market.

BALTREL (Baltic Ring Electricity Co-operation Committee)

In 1998, Lietuvos Energija together with 18 organisations representing 11 countries signed a memorandum on the establishment of the BALTREL with the primary objective - to create a common electricity market around the Baltic Sea. Since then the company has been participating in BALTREL activities.

CIGRE (Conseil International des Grands Réseaux Électriques – the International Council on Large Electric Systems)

Lietuvos Energija has had the status of a collective CIGRE member since 2003, and the company has been involved in the activity of the Nordic Regional Council of CIGRE since 2001.

ENTSO-E (European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity)

On 19 December 2008, a new association was established by CEOs of the European companies performing the functions of transmission system operators in 42 countries – the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E). Aloyzas Koryzna, CEO of Lietuvos Energija, was elected member of the board of the association. The activities of all the European electrical power associations will be transferred to ENTSO-E by mid-2009. The association has been formed on the basis of former international organisations as UCTE, ETSO, NORDEL, BALTSO and the UK‘s and Irish associations, which previously had operated as a separate area. ENTSO-E covers the entirety of Europe including non-EU states such as Norway and Switzerland. For Lithuania, the membership means that we are as important as any other European high-voltage system operator. By participating in the activities and management of this organisation we contribute to the formulation of the strategy of the future European high-voltage operator network, the network‘s long-term development plans, and the common network maintenance regulations. We can have our say and can make proposals for the projects that are vital to us, i. e.  the links with Poland and Sweden and the interconnection with UCTE.

LEA (Lithuanian Electricity Association)

Lietuvos Energija has been a member of the Lithuanian Electricity Association since 2000. The company has a representative in the Council of the Association. The LEA works with most power companies operating in the electricity sector of Lithuania and represents Lithuania’s interests in EURELECTRIC.

EURELECTRIC (Union of the Electricity Industry)

As a member of the Lithuanian Electricity Association Lietuvos Energija is also involved in the activity of EURELECTRIC. The company’s specialists are members of EURELECTRIC management bodies and working groups.

LPK (Lithuanian Confederation of Industrialists)

The Confederation unites forty branch and eight regional associations of industrial enterprises and represents the interests of Lithuania’s largest electricity consumers.

As a member of this organisation Lietuvos Energija participates in the activities of the Energy Committee of the Confederation.

WEC (World Energy Council)

The WEC Member Committee, uniting the associations of various energy sectors of Lithuania, companies, organisations and individual members, is functioning in Lithuania. Lietuvos Energija takes part in the activities of the WEC Member Committee through the Lithuanian Electricity Association, which is a member of this Committee, as well as through some of the company’s employees, who are individual members of the Committee.

BRELL (Belarus – Russia – Estonia – Latvia – Lithuania)

To ensure the reliable supply of electricity, the power systems of the Baltic States have to operate in parallel with the power systems of Russia and Belarus. In order to match the requirements of the power systems’ parallel operation with market principles, on the initiative of the Baltic power companies, five power companies (Lietuvos Energija, Latvenergo, Eesti Energia, RAO UES of Russia and Belenergo) signed an agreement on parallel operation in 2001. On the basis of the agreement BRELL was established. The BRELL committee and the working groups solve the problems related to parallel operation of their power system with a goal of co-ordinating their decisions with the requirements of the European Union.
