COMPETENCE IN ENERGY MANAGEMENT
Lietuvos Energija AB is one of the constituent parts of the parallely operating power systems of the Baltic States, Belarus and Russia, managing the flows of the most important type of energy in industry and households – electricity. Lietuvos Energija has a long history and deep traditions. Until 1997 the company had control over the district heating sector, and until 2002 the company was involved in electricity generation and distribution activities as well. Presently the company carries out the functions of transmission operator (operation and maintenance), system operator (dispatch control, security of supply) and market operator.
The team of Lietuvos Energija, having extensive experience, profound knowledge and strengthened by the potential of young specialists, has set a goal of becoming a modern power company complying with the international standards and requirements raised for progressive power companies in today’s market. Lietuvos Energija was the first power company in the Baltics which reorganised its activity in accordance with the requirements of the EU Directives and achieved the biggest progress in its readiness to operate in an open electricity market, surpassing most East European power companies in these aspects. The main objective of the company – reliable and efficient electricity transmission and operation of Lithuania’s power system by providing network users with unrestricted access to the transmission grid, and establishment of conditions for the functioning of a competitive market.

To comply with the high standards of performance in the progressive energy industry and to properly carry out the assigned tasks and goals in the long-term, we have set the following strategic directions of our activities:
- To ensure long-term reliability of the power system on the transmission level. The company shall plan long-term development of the power system with regard to the requirements of security of supply, quality, efficiency, consumption, management and environmental protection. The company shall renovate and upgrade the electricity transmission network to satisfy the growing requirements of quality and reliability of supply and with regard to the needs of transmission network users. The company shall prepare the transmission system for operation after the closure of Unit 1 and Unit 2 of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant. The company shall upgrade the control of the power system by implementing modern information and telecommunications technologies.
- To create conditions for the functioning of an open competitive electricity market. The company in due time shall get ready for the full opening of the electricity market in Lithuania in accordance with European Union requirements. The company shall technically prepare the network for reliable operation under market conditions and establish equal conditions for all market players to have free access to information needed for trade in electricity. The company shall ensure objective and undiscriminating conditions of access to the network for all its users.
- To integrate into the European Union power system. The company, with the assistance of the EU, shall construct a high-capacity interconnection with the Polish power system which will not only provide the opportunity to be integrated with electricity markets in Europe, but will also improve the reliability of supply. The company, together with the power companies of Estonia, Finland and Latvia, shall invest into the construction of a sea cable line, which will interconnect the electricity networks of the Baltic States and Nordic Countries. The company shall actively collaborate with the EU electricity systems, both directly and on the level of professional associations.
- To cooperate the Baltic electricity systems. The company shall strengthen co-operation and collaboration with the electricity systems of Latvia and Estonia and shall establish conditions for the functioning of a common electricity market and shall strive to optimally use the potential of the electricity systems of the Baltic States. The company shall pursue working out a common development plan of a transmission system in the Baltics, create a common system for balancing, regulation and maintaining reserves as well as a common market for trade in electricity.
- To develop co-operation with the power systems of Russia and Belarus. The company shall maintain close relationship with the neighbouring electricity systems of Russia and Belarus and together with these systems shall ensure a reliable and parallel operation. The company shall develop co-operation depending on the organisational and market changes in these systems.
- To improve the efficiency of company operations. The objective of the company is to attain an efficient use of its tangible and intangible assets and thus to satisfy the interests of its shareholders and customers in the best possible way, and to achieve the goals set by the state authorities. The company shall strive to optimally use the advantages of the energy industry of the region to promote efficiency of operations by optimising the potential of the power systems in the Baltic States, CIS, EU and Nordic Countries.
- To implement progressive human resources management systems in the company. The company shall endeavour to become a learning organisation, shall further develop the program of recruiting and training energy specialists, shall implement an employee training system oriented towards changes in the market and shall promote collaboration to balance the responsibilities among company employees and management.
- To ensure consistency between company operations and the environment. The company shall assure the compatibility of its operations with the EU environmental protection requirements, shall work out a system for increasing electricity output from renewable electricity resources and shall give input into the implementation of this national goal. The company shall connect the established number of wind power plants to the grid and shall make investments into the development of environmentally-friendly technologies of electricity transmission.
